AMENAZAS Y OPORTUNIDADES DE REDUCCIÓN DE RIESGOS POR VIRUS INFLUENZA EN LA INTERFASE ANIMAL-HOMBRE Rev Salud Anim.
Alfonso,P.

American visceral Leishmaniasis: a case report J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Langoni,H.; Lucheis,S. B.; Da Silva,R. C.; Castro,A. P. B.; Paes,A. C..
Visceral leishmaniasis is a zoonotic disease caused by parasites of the Leishmania genus. Dog is the major source of infection to man, especially in urban areas. The authors report a case of visceral leishmaniasis in a pit bull female dog from Bocaina, São Paulo, Brazil. The animal presented clinical signs compatible with leishmaniasis, including skin lesions in the body and partial damage of the external ears. The indirect fluorescent antibody test (IFAT) demonstrated a titer of 1280, and promastigote forms of Leishmania sp were isolated by the culture of bone marrow puncture. Cytological analysis of the lymph node and smear of the bone marrow puncture revealed macrophages containing amastigote forms of Leishmania sp in their inner region. The test of...

ABSTRACT: Vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV) is the agent of a vesicular disease that affects many animal species and may be clinically confounded with foot-and-mouth disease in ruminant and swine. Horses are especially susceptible to VSV and may serve as sentinels for virus circulation. The present study investigated the presence of neutralizing antibodies against VSV Indiana III (VSIV-3) in serum samples of 3,626 horses from six states in three Brazilian regions: Southern (RS, n = 1,011), Midwest (GO/DF, n = 1,767) and Northeast (PB, PE, RN and CE, n = 848) collected between 2013 and 2014. Neutralizing antibodies against VSIV-3 (titers ≥40) were detected in 641 samples (positivity of 17.7%; CI95%:16.5-19.0%), being 317 samples from CE (87.3%; CI95%:...

Langoni,Helio; Kuribara,Ivone Yumi; Correa,Ana Paula Ferreira Lopes; Ullmann,Leila Sabrina; Sánchez,Gabriela Pacheco; Lucheis,Simone Baldini.
Abstract Background The interest in commercial use of wild animals is increasing, especially regarding raising of capybaras. Although this wild species is potentially lucrative for the production of meat, oil and leather, it is suggested as a probable reservoir of leptospires. Methods Due to the economic importance of this species and the lack of studies concerning leptospirosis, the presence of anti-leptospirosis agglutinins was assayed in 55 serum samples of capybaras (Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris) from commercial and experimental breeding flocks located in São Paulo state, Paraná state, and Rio Grande do Sul state, Brazil. Samples were obtained through cephalic or femoral venipunction (5 to 10 mL). Microscopic agglutination test was used according to...

Brazilian borreliosis with special emphasis on humans and horses BJM
Basile,Roberta Carvalho; Yoshinari,Natalino Hajime; Mantovani,Elenice; Bonoldi,Virgínia Nazário; Macoris,Delphim da Graça; Queiroz-Neto,Antonio de.
Abstract Borreliosis caused by Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato is a cosmopolitan zoonosis studied worldwide; it is called Lyme disease in many countries of the Northern Hemisphere and Lyme-like or Baggio-Yoshinari Syndrome in Brazil. However, despite the increasing number of suspect cases, this disease is still neglected in Brazil by the medical and veterinary communities. Brazilian Lyme-like borreliosis likely involves capybaras as reservoirs and Amblyomma and Rhipicephalus ticks as vectors. Thus, domestic animals can serve as key carriers in pathogen dissemination. This zoonosis has been little studied in horses in Brazil. The first survey was performed in the state of Rio de Janeiro, and this Brazilian Borreliosis exhibits many differences from the...

Visceral leishmaniasis is a zoonotic disease caused by the protozoa of the mononuclear phagocyte system, having dogs as its main urban host. Clinical diagnosis is difficult to perform because of the diversity of clinical signs and the occurrence of asymptomatic cases. Thus, the disease is confirmed by employing laboratory methods. This study reports a case of canine visceral leishmaniasis in which the patient presented several clinical signs, and the veterinarian’s knowledge about the disease was necessary to establish the correct diagnosis.

ABSTRACT In this study, we described the antifungal activity of three Brazilian propolis extracts: brown, green and from jataí bees against Sporothrix brasiliensis. The extracts were obtained from ethanolic extraction and their chemical composition was determined by high-performance liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry. The cellular toxicity was measured in MDBK (Madin-Darby Bovine Kidney) cells and quantified by the MTT assay (3- (4,5 dimethylthiazol-2yl -2,5-diphenyl-2H bromine tetrazolato). For antifungal activity, the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum fungicidal concentration (MFC) were determined by broth microdilution. The results showed that cell toxicity was not observed at lower concentrations (0.097 to 0.39μg/ml)...

Clostridium difficile infection: main features and occurrence in domestic species in Brazil Ciência Rural
Silva,Rodrigo Otávio Silveira; Guedes,Roberto Maurício de Carvalho; Lobato,Francisco Carlos Faria.
Clostridium difficile is an emerging enteropathogen of humans and domestic animals. The bacterium was recently confirmed to be present in foals and dogs in Brazil, with some recent studies suggesting that C. difficile is one of the most important causes of piglet diarrhea in the country. Moreover, some reports also suggest the transmission of this microorganism between animals and humans, raising the possibility that C. difficile is a zoonotic disease. Therefore, the aim of the present review is to describe the main features of C. difficile infection in domestic animals and outline the occurrence of the disease in horses, dogs and pigs in Brazil.

Antunes,JMAP; Machado,GP; Costa,LF; Fornazari,F; Cipriano,JRB; Appolinário,CM; Allendorf,SD; Bagagli,E; Teixeira,CR; Megid,J.
The aim of the current study was to evaluate the infection rate by Brucella spp. in wild and in captive animals. Serum samples from 121 animals (94 free-ranging and 27 captive) of different mammal species were evaluated. Sera were submitted to rose Bengal test (RBT) for screening and serum agglutination tests (SAT) and 2-mercaptoethanol test (2-ME) for confirmatory results. Nine animals (five free-ranging and four captive) tested positive in RBT, but negative in the confirmatory tests. Several domestic animal diseases that have control programs are not focused on wild reservoirs, such as brucellosis in Brazil. The study of new reservoirs in wildlife is essential to prevent emerging diseases.

Cryptococcosis and its importance in Veterinary Medicine MV&Z
Müller, Marina; Nishizawa, Márcia.
Cryptococcosis is an opportunist systemic mycosis considered as zoonosis caused by the complex Cryptococcus neoformans that comprises two etiologic agents, C. neoformans and C. gattii. Both of them can attack birds, humans, domestic animals and wild ones. The infection is produced by spores inhalation. These spores are often isolated from pigeon (Columba livia) faeces. These birds are considered as the natural fungus reservoir. The lesions of this disease can be found in several organ systems and it is one of the mycosis with prompt diagnosis because the infectious agent presents a marked neurological tropism, plenty of fungy elements in the CSF and in the lesions. The treatment of animals and humans must be performed with selected different drugs to...

Development and validation of a genotype 3 recombinant protein-based immunoassay for hepatitis E virus serology in swine BJMBR
van der Poel,W.H.M.; Pavio,N.; van der Goot,J.; van Es,M.; Martin,M.; Engel,B..
Hepatitis E virus (HEV) is classified within the family Hepeviridae, genus Hepevirus. HEV genotype 3 (Gt3) infections are endemic in pigs in Western Europe and in North and South America and cause zoonotic infections in humans. Several serological assays to detect HEV antibodies in pigs have been developed, at first mainly based on HEV genotype 1 (Gt1) antigens. To develop a sensitive HEV Gt3 ELISA, a recombinant baculovirus expression product of HEV Gt3 open reading frame-2 was produced and coated onto polystyrene ELISA plates. After incubation of porcine sera, bound HEV antibodies were detected with anti-porcine anti-IgG and anti-IgM conjugates. For primary estimation of sensitivity and specificity of the assay, sets of sera were used from pigs...
